Plastic Straw Ban Australia

Australia has made some steady progress towards banning single use plastic straws in retail and hospitality outlets.  Plastic straws are still offered and freely available at fast food locations and on the whole the average consumer continues to be comfortable using plastic straws.  But awareness is growing and the trending growth of reusable metal straws and silicone straws supports this.

Stainless Steel Straws is a young family business based in Merewether, New South Wales.  We are proud of our local roots and the fact that we are positively contributing to more eco-awareness.

Our Story in 100 words or less

I came to the zero-waste and plastic-free space after working through lots of personal development.  It was a natural progression to see how unhealthy foods impact on my family's health - and how an active outdoor life is the way to go.

So we sold our gourmet food and wine business and began exploring our options in the health and wellness space.  I trained in life coaching and meditation and was hosting mindfulness walks around national parks - but then stainlesssteelstraws.com.au came along.  We haven't looked back!

“Zero waste is not about complicating your life, but simplifying it. We were drowning in stuff, and I was tired of marketeers, that I had to put a stop to it. So the first step to zero waste is refusing what you don’t need. You need to learn to say no.”

Banning Straws in Australia

"Minimalism isn't about deprivation. I still buy that expensive Burberry trench coat that costs thousands of pounds because it's great-looking and great value... But I am more conscious of how I spend because I want to be free of physical, emotional and financial clutter. I'm paying attention to the ethos of buying products that are environmentally-friendly and made with fair trade practices. I'm careful about my purchases."

Silicone Reusable Straws

So I wouldn’t usually make a post like this but these things are amazing. I’m trying to reduce my impact on the environment and to participate in that straw challenge that’s happening, at least here in Australia, where you try your hardest to stop using single use plastic straws.

I’m doing good so far but I wanted to share these amazing and cheap straws I found that are multi use and should probably last forever. I drink coffee most days so that means I use a straw every day and I felt like reuseable straws would dramatically cut back on my harm to the environment and these might help you if you do the same.

So the brand is SiliconeStraws.com.au and they make these colourful silicon straws. They actually come with enough brushes to clean them which is pretty wild but they're also dishwasher safe because they’re silicone. all you really need the brushes for is if you drank a smoothie or something that wouldn’t clean out as well and needs an extra scrub.

I just pop the straw I used for coffee in my cup of water and that always gives it a good in between rinse so there isnt any nasty stuff hanging around in the straw. They also come in this fabric bag so you can keep them clean and safe and take them anywhere with you which is pretty convenient if you’re trying to do the straw thing like me.

They’re also big enough to fit in almost every kind of vessel, I’ve been using this huge half gallon water bottle with them and they’re long enough to touch the bottom which is great. I’ve seen a lot of people going for glass reusable straws which is just fine but they’re pretty damn expensive and fragile.

I went for these because I would immediately break a glass straw so if youre like me I’d opt for a silicone or other plastic straw. So yeah, these things are great! They’re cheap and easy to clean and convenient and there great for if your doing this straw challenge thingy. I highly encourage everyone to do the straw challenge and stop sucking through single use plastic straws!

Rose Gold Stainless Steel Straws

Rose Gold Stainless Steel Straws

Rose gold is a mixture of yellow gold, copper and silver. The copper gives it a redder color than yellow gold naturally has.

The silver helps to tone down the redness of the copper, achieving a subtle pink shade.
Yes. When it comes to purity, rose gold is no different from yellow gold or white gold.

UK hallmarked 18K gold contains 75% gold. 9K gold contains 38% gold. This is regardless of whether the gold is white, yellow or rose gold in colour.

But, with Rose Gold Stainless Steel Straws, you are looking at something completely different.

THE FASHION INDUSTRY has a long history with rose gold, a color that exists somewhere between luxury and fashion. It's not as gaudy as gold, or as timeless. It goes in and out of style, and right now it's very much back in. In the consumer electronics world, especially, rose gold is enjoying its inaugural moment.

Color is hard to talk about without sounding like you've dropped acid, but people do associate colors with feelings and emotions. You can't quantify whether or why people like colors—"like" is so subjective a term—but you can determine what it makes them feel.

Leatrice Eiseman, a color expert and executive director of the Pantone Institute, the semi-deified experts on color, has seen this first hand.

two rose gold stainless steel straws bent

Rose Gold Reusable Straws

"There's a lot of research that goes into what color means," she says, "and how it makes a statement to most people." Rose gold has the same effect on almost everyone.

"When we get to the rose family, we get these same kinds of verbiage: Compassion, composure, warmth, something that draws you in that has great appeal."

Each winter, the Pantone Institute names its colors of the year, trying to capture what everyone is thinking and feeling within that color.

The video accompanying the 2016 selection of Rose Quartz, a kissing cousin to rose gold, and a shade of blue called Serenity, is particularly telling. It opens with a montage of desperately serious things: Protests, fights, riots, the word hashtag for some reason.

It feels like a subliminal brainwashing video, something meant to be felt, not noticed. Suddenly, the clouds part, the music slows, and the heartbeat of the video slows as Rose Quartz and Serenity fill the screen.

These colors, Eiseman says, are "an answer to the stress of modern-day lives. A yearning for reassurance."

Rose Gold Stainless Steel Cocktail Straws

The institute selected Rose Quartz because it wanted something that conveys a "sense of order and peace, something that speaks to people. Something that has a bit more mindfulness attached to it.

But the real beauty of rose gold is what it says about the world and why it's proven so popular. Consumers love it for the subliminal sense of peace and calm it provides in an increasingly hectic world.

Companies love it because it conveys opulence and comfort, two things that aren't easily communicated with a metal rectangle.

Ultimately, a rose gold stainless steel straw is more than a just a straw. It's a choice, a decision that says something about what you value. And "if it ends up not working out for you," you might say, laughing, "it’s not like you can't get another straw sometime soon..."

why use stainless steel straws

It has just broken down into smaller pieces. We sell straight straws.  Marine life and birds are now mistaking these little pieces for food. They can't digest the plastic in their stomach and end up in a lot of pain. Many birds and fish, even whales, are dying from eating plastic.

And ultimately, plastic has now made its way into the human food chain. So we are eating micro-plastics outselves.  Buying bent straws helps with it.

Here's a couple of things to get you started....

1. #refusethestraw when you are out. It's a bit of a tricky habit at the start but you get used to it and it shows businesses what their customers want.  By choosing to refuse, you set in motion the intent and begin to manifest a less wasteful consumer culture.  It might seem insignificant - but it changes things.

2. Use your Straight Straw, of Bent Straw as much as possible! Every time you use your Coloured Straws, you're saving a straw from going to landfill or ending up in the ocean. Over a lifetime, it's something like 38,000 less straws.  Plus, They are nicer to use and healthier than the disposable ones.

3. Share your pics on social media. Spread the message far and wide! We can be the change for good!

1 - Know your why - why are your buying something?  Do you really need it?  Are you shopping because you are bored, or out of habit, or to keep up with a trend or your neighbours?

When you pause and question your why, often the delay itself leads to you refusing and not making the purchase.  There's a reason marketers have words like "impulse shopping" "up sells" and "cross sells" - and it is because they work.  You can just shake your head if you find it challenging to say the actual word NO.

2 - Focus on the process, not your progress.  Or, don't allow your idea of perfection hold you back from sharing your good efforts.

Look, no matter how hard you believe in the power of good intentions, your reduced plastic consumption will most likely not result in shrinkage of the great Pacific Garbage Patch.
